SEA TURTLES
#Sea turtles first evolved over 245 million years ago. They are cold-blooded reptiles that lay eggs and use lungs to breathe air. They live in both tropical and temperate oceans and their primary predators are birds, crabs, raccoons and humans. All sea turtle species around the globe are threatened and in many countries, including Mexico, they are protected by law.
Here are some tips:
LIGHT SCARES THEM AWAY
Sea turtles come out to nest protected by the darkness of night. Strong lights on the beach and the sea, as well as bonfires, will scare them away. Please avoid using lights, and don´t use flash photography.
LET THEM COME IN
Beach beds, kayaks, nets, or any other object, can obstruct the nesting turtle´s way on to the beach. Avoid leaving such articles on the beach during the night.
GO AROUND THEM
Sea turtles are easily disturbed by human presence. If you encounter one, avoid coming close to her, and do not touch or mount her. Try to keep still and quiet, and don´t smoke near her.
DON´T LITTER
Turtles may confuse litter, mainly plastics, with their own food. This may cause them injuries, or even death. Avoid littering the beach or the ocean.
NO DOGS OR CATS
Loose pets might frighten the turtles, destroy their nests, and eat their offspring. Please keep them at home.
GREEN IS LIFE
Native vegetation is part of the beaches wildlife balance, and therefore protects the turtle´s nesting grounds. Don´t burn, cut, or pull out any plants or trees.
WATCH YOUR STEP
Horse back and motorcycle rides, as well as ball games, may destroy the turtle´s nests. Be careful when you practice any of these sports and avoid the nesting grounds.
BABY CARE
Once out of their nest, the sea turtle hatchling will crawl towards the sea, their natural habitat. Let them walk by. You can help them by avoiding any artificial light on the beach which might disorient them.
SAY NO
Do not purchase or consume any turtle-derived products, such as meat, eggs, oils, or turtle-shell handcrafts.
Let’s do what we can to get sea turtles off the endangered list!!!
